ELECTRONIC DESIGN COST CASE STUDY
Hardware and software services for custom-made electronics
Bernini Design SRL has specialised in electronics since 1984 and has hundreds of projects under its belt: a valuable asset that makes us absolutely competitive.
Delivering hardware, software services and turn-key solutions is our daily obsession. If you have a brilliant idea about a product, but you are stuck with miscellaneous problems, this website presents some workarounds. The page is full of links that expose particular services, all focused on a product essentially of an electronic nature.

CONSULTANCY SERVICES
Transforming an idea into a physical product or electronic device could be the start of your successful business.

However, a grandiose idea is of little use if it isn't economically feasible. But generally, people or companies see the opportunity to introduce products, perhaps nonexistent ones, without considering the market.
You risk getting the price wrong and missing out.
THE "TURNKEY" PRODUCT
Product design is an activity that gives shape to your idea. You imagine a device, but before proceeding to the creation of the printed circuit boards or control panel, you need to define the aesthetic, ergonomic, practical, and, above all, cost-effective aspects.

This is the way of going from an idea to a turnkey product.
Our TEAM LEADER, Bernini Mentore, interfaces with the client, interprets their needs and transforms them into information that the project team can understand.
For every function a "product" should perform, there are at least five it shouldn't.
The TEAM LEADER has over 100 projects of experience and a comprehensive understanding of safety and ease of use.

Designers follow a flowchart that bypasses any ISO certification. Bernini Design doesn't open dozens of projects at the same time. Multitasking doesn't exist in Bernini Design's hardware or software design.
ELECTRONIC HARDWARE DESIGN
It refers to the set of physical, electronic components of an electronic device. In most cases, disassembly allows the original components to be obtained.
The hardware designer has comprehensive experience in electronics, can create electrical diagrams, even in pencil, using ALTIUM CAD, and is well-versed in digital and analogue electronics. They have extensive laboratory experience, manual dexterity, and prototyping proficiency. They have comprehensive knowledge of all electronic components and are quick to learn any new component on the market.

Understands product safety regulations, printed circuit board design rules, and thermodynamic and mechanical laws. Creates a solid and reliable design. The printed circuit board is the support for the components. The following link provides all the processes that lead to the production of printed circuit boards, starting from a schematic.
The hardware design complies with international standards
ISO26262 / IEC60730 / IEC60335
SOFTWARE & FIRMWARE DESIGN
The software is the result of the work of an intelligent entity (not necessarily human) transferred through programming to the control processor of the electronic board.
Despite having abstract functions, the "software engineer" is the person who brings an electronic product to life. He or she generates organised, easily updateable software. He or she keeps in mind the possibility of exporting the work to other hardware platforms. The project can be reused even if components are replaced.
Obsolescence is a phenomenon that increasingly affects microcontrollers, but firmware must be adaptable.

Our software designer takes particular care in developing the components that make up the human-machine interface. He relies on simple solutions and common sense. Software development encompasses compliance with regulations.

Is it more difficult to design hardware or software?
Excellent question. Our vision is clear: poor hardware "stifles" software; poor software renders even the most powerful hardware useless. However, there is a grayscale where the two balance each other, elevating the final result.
Designing them is equally difficult. But the real challenge—one that many underestimate—is the strategy for testing the final application. It's not just a technical task for those who write code or design circuits: it's an overall vision.
This is the secret of Bernini Design.
PRODUCTION OF A "WIRE-WRAP" PROTOTYPE
The lab technician, after receiving the hardware instructions, builds a prototype that allows:
1) verification of the wiring diagram's accuracy
2) multiple access points for measurements
3) easy modifications in near real time
4) The software technician immediately begins developing the functions

Testing the spun prototype provides feedback to the hardware designer: this is where the final printed circuit boards begin to shape. Modifications are quick and easy: an essential foundation for starting any electronics project.
CASINGS and ACCESSORIES
Enclosure is the technical term used in electronics for the "SHELL" that holds electronic components. For industrial applications, a range of standard enclosures of various designs is available. For the civilian or medical sectors, the optimal solution is a specially developed enclosure. In the past, this was a costly undertaking.

With 3D printers, this is a simple job that takes just a few hours. In some cases, if production is not very high, the printer is used for mass production. It's also necessary to develop items in rubber or special composite materials. In these cases, costs become significant. Never underestimate the work of a specialised mechanical designer: they offer useful information and solutions for product reliability.

APP & WEB SUPPORT
We have technicians capable of developing apps with application support portals. We can also support you with web technology to effectively promote your product. These services are affordable thanks to AI tools.
PRODUCT CERTIFICATION
The basic certification we provide is CE self-certification. Our products are designed according to the standards relevant to their final application:
CEI64-8 / IEC61000 / IEC33.100 / IPC2221 / CEI91 / ISO13485
We can, however, provide special UL and TUV certifications. The costs of these certifications are not included in the design. However, if Bernini Design is informed of the need for a specific certification before work begins, it will be responsible for modifying the project at its own expense until certification is obtained. If certification becomes necessary after the project is completed, modifications may be necessary. We will, of course, apply reasonable and mutually negotiated prices.
ARTISAN PRODUCTIONS
We have staff specialised in the manual assembly of small batches, an essential step before mass production.

It takes many hours of work. But, in the end, the result is satisfying. As a reference example, in 8 hours of work, including breaks, you can assemble 5 boards populated with over 88 components. The cost is $19.00 per unit.
EXPERTS IN ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS PURCHASING
Hardware and software designers consult with the purchasing manager. This avoids the risk of designing a product with components that aren't readily available.
Before approving a component for use by the design team, the electronics purchasing manager must ensure the following information is available:
1- The component or components are readily available
2- There are at least three sources of supply
3- The component's use is not subject to patent restrictions
4- The component's price has been stable for at least six months
5- The components are commonly used by other manufacturers
6- A thorough internet search reveals no problems
7- Ensures timely delivery of samples to designers
8- Provides valid, compatible, or adaptable alternatives
9- Able to provide accurate costs for bulk orders
10- Encourages designers to preferentially use in-stock components
11- Ensures the supplier is capable of providing technical support
SMALL AND MEDIUM SERIES PRODUCTION
The customer has all the necessary documentation to proceed with production independently. Bernini Design issues its own quotation but leaves the customer free to choose. Production is entrusted to our production facility:
ELECTRONIC MANUFACTURING SERVICES
We evaluate potential improvements to the production cycle making suitable adjustments. We believe we have competitive prices for small and medium-sized production runs. Large volumes are not our company policy. However, we have good relationships with leading international electronics manufacturing services companies.
